Barron Scores In Overtime To Lift Knights To 2nd Straight Samson Cup
After a grueling six games the Knights were 45 minutes away from defending their Samson Cup crown. The series seemed all but a sure thing for the Knights, having never trailed in the series and going into Game 7 up by two goals. Two, would be the number that would define this series.
Throughout the series, no team won a game by anything other than two goals, and the one game that ended in a draw… 2-2. The Snipers needed to break that streak if they were going to win their first Samson Cup; a task they were more than willing to take.
Off the opening faceoff, the Snipers took control in the Knights’ zone. After a failed clearing attempt, Sniper’s coach, Kyle Nemez, buried a shot from the point to give his team a 1-0 lead and put them one goal behind (23-24) in the series. The play would remain the same for the rest of the period when halfway through, Ben Mitchnik scored his first and most important goal of the series, giving them that two-goal lead and tying the series 24-24. Things were looking great for the Snipers until, off a faceoff in their defensive end, Jordan Podolsky ripped a shot short side to regain the series lead 25-24.
The Snipers were relentless in their pursuit of the tying goal, pressuring and keeping the Knights deep in their own end. Finally, with just over seven minutes left in the 3rd Thomas Watt banged in a rebound off a Tyrell Lysohirka shot. The Snipers had regained the two goals they needed to send this game to overtime.
Two, the most important number of the series. The Snipers won Game 7 by two, but it was a different “two” that would prove to be the deciding factor… two minute minor. With 26 seconds left in the 3rd period the Snipers took a tripping penalty, sending the Knights to the power play to start overtime. Their penalty kill was doing a great job and just as the penalty was about to expire, Knights captain and #22, Brett Barron, threw a soft backhand towards the net. The shot eluded a screened Dylon Bowman and snuck just inside the post for the Cup winning goal.
The Knight won their 2nd straight Samson Cup 26-25.
