The Jets are the Winter 2023 Stanley Cup Champions!
After a slow start to the season, going 1-5-4 in their first ten games, the Jets rattled off a 7-3 record to end the season securing a 3rd place finish. The Kings on the other hand, had a more even start to the season (4-3-3), but ended the season winning four of their last 5 games to take top spot going into the playoffs.
That momentum would carry both teams through their semi final matchups to secure a chance at the Stanley Cup. The Kings were making their 8th Stanley Cup Final appearance, while the Jets were making their 6th. Both teams have faced off in the final three times with the last being back in 2018.
From the outset this final was going to be fast and intense. Both teams came out swinging, but it was the Jets who took the opening lead, and they would never look back. After the Jets went up 2-0, Elijah Armbruster brought the Kings back to within one with a silky smooth penalty shot. He would tie things up shortly afterwards on another penalty shot but it was called off after Kings' coach, Walker Hobbs, notified the officials that Armbruster had lost forward progress on his attempt. Outstanding sportsmanship from the Kings. The Jet would add two more to take game one 4-1.
The Jets didn't stop in game two, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead moments into the game. They would continue to put the ball in the net, potting five goals in the opening period. The Kings were able to get a few past Jets goaltender, Lucas Cochrane, but struggled to find the bounces when needed. The Jets held off the Kings' final push in the last three minutes to win game two 7-4 and win the franchise's third Stanley Cup!
Playoff MVP: Lucas Cochrane
